A few years back at the height of the idea that Amazon is going to destroy all retail business, a few of us at Meijer were a little frustrated that we couldn't get beyond clipping coupons and rewards.

This was a challenging time in retail & grocery.

  • Amazon bought Whole Foods.

  • Amazon started to roll out the Amazon Go Stores.

  • Food deflation was cutting into grocery margins.

  • More and more people were eating out and shopping less.

We wondered if we could make an App on our own time and proved that we could do it, that leadership might give us the go-ahead to make it officially.

There were rumors that upper leadership was looking externally to make a Pizza App, so that's what we set off to make.

Even though it was not released, it was fully functional to the point of having the orders printed out so that they could be made in the Deli. When upper management saw it, it was expressed they wanted something where you could order from the entire Deli, not just Pizza.

Various leaders, scrum master, my boss, my bosses boss, were involved.

It was quite the endeavor for an off-hours project, but there were quite a few of us that wanted to prove that we could do more.

From that aspect, I like to think it was a success.
